Chapter 6

“Can someone just dump some ice on me!” Maggie exclaimed, trying to fan herself with the flyer she’d been handed upon entering the club. She proceeded to sign ‘the book’ using Marilyn Monroe for the millionth time—no one ever used their real name, who would?

“Don’t drink, that’ll just make it worse,” Danielle, who stood at her elbow, advised.

“But I get flirty when I drink, you like that.” Maggie laughed at the look on Danielle’s face. A combination of guilt and humor was mirrored in those blue eyes.

“I do like that,” Danielle agreed, “but I also don’t want you getting sick because you’re dehydrated, so stick to at least a water after ever drink, okay?”

Maggie smiled as she nodded. She loved that Danielle was so concerned about her. Their relationship was still developing. Maggie had no idea how to be a lesbian, but what she did know was that Danielle made her feel more loved and cherished than any boy ever had. To her way of thinking, something that felt this good had to be right, didn’t it?

They made their way to the booths where Christopher and his latest boyfriend sat. In the year they’d been in New York, she and Christopher had started at the local community college. It was the only way their parents would let them stay. Neither of them knew what they wanted to do for a living, but they could take general education classes until they figured it out. Christopher had been through a number of boyfriends—he was so handsome, he caught the eye of many of the men in the community.

“Hi Robert,” Maggie greeted, as she leaned in to hug Christopher.

“Hello Magpie.” Robert smiled with big teeth. He reminded Maggie of a horse, but he was nice to Christopher, so she figured he was a good guy.

“Don’t call me that!” Maggie frowned, glancing at Danielle who only laughed. “That’s what Dani calls me; you can’t call me that.”

“Does it make it less special?” Christopher queried. “Aren’t you so very special?”

The tone and pitch of Christopher’s voice told Maggie that he was drunk, which wasn’t a good sign. She and Christopher were underage, and shouldn’t be drinking at all, but to be very obviously drunk wasn’t wise.

“Are you drunk or high?” Maggie raised an eyebrow at her friend.

“I’ll never tell!” Christopher chimed, laughing at his own perceived hilarity.

Maggie exchanged a concerned look with Danielle. They were always hyper-aware of the cops that could burst in at any moment. The last thing they wanted was to call attention to themselves. Maggie watched Danielle lean over to talk to Robert. His lips twitched, and Maggie could tell that the older man didn’t like being told what to do, but he finally nodded.

Robert got up from the table and went to the bar. Maggie watched him. He was one of the more masculine-looking men Christopher had dated. He wore jeans and cowboy boots, and a nice button-up shirt. Christopher, on the other hand, had taken up an effeminate persona; she knew he was being influenced by other gay boys he hung around with.
